Jervis Bay – Cave Beach

Jervis bay is situated on the NSW South Coast, approximately 3 hours south of Sydney and 3 hours east of Canberra.

Hyams Beach, within Jervis Bay is said to have the whitest sand in the world

Although within Jervis Bay their are many campsites the one in question here is Cave Beach. Quite famous for its seclusion amazing views and proximity to the beach.

View approaching the campsite

Our trip began on the Friday afternoon having loaded up the car the night before ready to make a quick get away from work wanting to beat the Friday rush and avoid if possible setting up the tent and equipment in the dark.

The drive down from Sydney is a quite an easy drive with lots of nice places to stop if time is not your enemy.

The Cave Beach campsite is a walk in only, meaning you have to park your car and carry your gear to the pitch site, the walk is a downhill 300m track

Setup

For my the best thing about this campsite is the amount of wildlife around and in the tent, all very used to humans so not shy. Whilst sat outside our tent on the first night we had a Possum in a tree above the tent, poo down into the entrance of our tent.

Then unfortunatley we get to the worst thing about this site, the first night we noticed quite a few people arriving after dark from 8PM onwards, assuming they were just arriving from leaving work late on a Friday afternoon, shortly after music started playing, again not a problem, it is a Friday evening after all.

Fast forward several hours later to about 4AM and music is still blaring people are still setting up tents and blowing up air mattresses and we got absolutely no sleep.

The following morning the park ranger arrived very early and we explained to him what had happened during the night, apparently the real reason people were arriving late was to avoid having to pay to camp by setting up under the cover of darkness however they were quickly sent packing thanks to the ranger.

He explained to us most weekends the campsite attracts a lot of backpackers and travellers who like to party all night, during the week its dead quiet apparently.

The campsite is truly beautiful with lots to see and do as long as you don’t mind roughing it with no warm showers and remote walk in access only, my recommendation would be to avoid the weekends if possible or look at some of the other campsites available in Booderee National Park.
